Hi,

Many families wonder why hospice is not brought up sooner.

They may think, “Did the doctors wait because they did not care?”

Most of the time, that is not the reason.

Many healthcare professionals care deeply about their patients. But in healthcare, most training focuses on treating illness, curing disease, and helping patients get better.

There is often very little training on how to talk with families when treatments are no longer working the way everyone hoped.

That is why hospice conversations can feel difficult for doctors, nurses, social workers, and case managers too.

In this week’s episode, I talk about why healthcare professionals may hesitate to start hospice conversations, and what families can ask when they see their loved one declining.

One helpful question families can ask is:

“Doctor, if this illness continues the way it is going, what should we prepare for?”

That one question can open the door to comfort care, palliative care, hospice care, and better planning.

Hospice is not about giving up.

It is about understanding options before a crisis happens.

ઘણા families ને એક સવાલ થાય છે:

“Doctors એ hospice વિશે વહેલી વાત કેમ ના કરી?”

ક્યારેક family ને એવું પણ લાગે કે, “શું તેમને કાળજી નહોતી?”

પણ ઘણી વખત એવું નથી હોતું.

ઘણા healthcare professionals દર્દી અને family માટે ખરેખર કાળજી રાખે છે. પરંતુ healthcare training મોટાભાગે disease treat કરવી, illness સાજી કરવી, અને patient ને better બનાવવી તેના પર હોય છે.

જ્યારે treatment હવે આપણે આશા રાખી હતી તેમ કામ કરતું ન હોય, ત્યારે family સાથે hospice અથવા comfort care વિશે વાત કેવી રીતે શરૂ કરવી, તેની training ઘણી વખત ઓછી હોય છે.

એટલા માટે doctors, nurses, social workers અને case managers માટે પણ આ વાતચીત શરૂ કરવી મુશ્કેલ બની શકે છે.

આ અઠવાડિયાના episode માં હું સમજાવું છું કે healthcare professionals hospice conversation શરૂ કરવામાં કેમ hesitate કરે છે, અને families શું સવાલો પૂછી શકે જ્યારે તેમને લાગે કે loved one ની condition ધીમે ધીમે decline થઈ રહી છે.

એક helpful સવાલ છે:

“Doctor, જો આ illness આવી જ રીતે આગળ વધે, તો અમારે શું તૈયારી રાખવી જોઈએ?”

આ એક સવાલ comfort care, palliative care, hospice care અને better planning ની વાત શરૂ કરી શકે છે.

Hospice વિશે પૂછવું એ give up કરવું નથી.

તેનો અર્થ છે crisis આવે તે પહેલાં options સમજવા.
