Something I want more families to know sooner

Welcome to weekly tips!

Hi Reader,

One of the things I hear most often from families — after everything is over — is that they wish they'd called hospice sooner.

There's a common belief that hospice is only for the very last days of life. It's not. In the U.S., hospice care is available when a doctor estimates someone has six months or less to live if their illness runs its natural course. That window is longer than most people realize.

Starting earlier means more time to get comfortable with the care team, more support in place before a crisis hits, and a gentler experience for your loved one. Families who wait until the final days often miss weeks — sometimes months — of support that was available to them all along.

If you're not sure whether it's the right time to start asking those questions, that's something I help families think through one-on-one.

Hi Reader,

Hi Reader, When hospice becomes the right next step, most families feel like they don't have options. Like the hospital or the doctor decides, and you just go along with it. That's not true. You have the right to choose your hospice company — and to change it if something isn't working. What most families don't know is that hospice companies vary more than you'd expect. Staffing, response times, after-hours coverage, whether there's a social worker or chaplain available — it's not the same...
